The hack came back…
Today upon reading my logs I noticed another attempt to take over our server at work. This one, still unsuccessful, was at least a touch more creative. I was once again able to download the “bot” they were trying to install on our server. I now sit here, after reading the code, pondering ethics yet again… The script does some scans for vulnerable servers and reports them back to teh hacker via an IRC channel. I wonder how much trouble I would actually get into if I were to modify this code to report back to the hacker the IP addresses of certain government agencies. I can’t imagine the script kiddie being smart enough to check the addresses first. I of course will not do such a thing, but the sick sadistic part of me wants to.
I’ve seen way to many of these kiddies who are dumb enough to attack their own IPs when given them by other people. I recall one of our “haxors” at the college that fell for that back in the days of the windows 95 Ping of Death popularity. I believe 3 differnet ocassions he threatened me saying he could crash my workstation, each time I told him, go for it… heres my IP, which of course was his own IP address. (ahhh the joys of early AIM direct connect clients) Seconds later “StupidKid has signed off” appeared in my AIM chat window. 5 to 6 minutes later he would reappear… and complain about how unstable the computers on campus were. Good times… Good times…
